tony doesn't sleep except the rare moments in which he does, and even then, he doesn't. not in the way most people do. not in a way that makes you feel refreshed and energised once you wake up.

because tony doesn't sleep unless he downs a whole bottle of whiskey like it's water. unless he locks himself inside his lab and works until his body gives in. unless he's knocked out cold in a fight.

tony always wakes up with a weight on his chest that presses against his lungs. or a feeling of guilt and shame so strong it turns his stomach inside out. or a headache that threatens to tear his mind in two.

he's never experienced the relief of an unconscious mind, doesn't know the route to the emergency exit that is sleep. even in his most intoxicated state, he'll be fumbling in the dark for that door, for that room of blissful silence. he's too aware, too burdened, too stubborn. the sleep he does get is as fleeting as a summer breeze.

unless there's someone holding him tight, a body pressed against his own so hard that he can't think of anything else. something that grounds him, that keeps him warm and safe and secure. but the people who willingly share a bed with him doesn't care for him, and the people whose touch he yearns for are either annoyed at him or unaware of his fragile state of mind due to the barrier he's built up over the years.

so he doesn't sleep, and he tells himself he doesn't need to because he is tony stark.
